#5 Final Fantasy VII – $145,000,000 (£92+ Million)

The seventh instalment of the Final Fantasy series, created by Squaresoft, was released way back in 1997. At the time, it was the most expensive video game of all time.

The graphics of this game were like nothing we’d seen before and make a lot of respected game developers rethink what they were doing.

#4 Star Wars: The Old Republic – $200,000,000 (£127+ Million)

SWTOR was released in 2011 and had such a high budget thanks to its hit predecessor – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

SWTOR had over 1 million paying subscribers during its first month, but the game slowly died down and had faded into obscurity.

In 2012 SWTOR was recognised as being the largest entertainment voice-over project ever by Guinness thanks to the games 200,000 plus lines of recorded dialogue.

#3 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – $250,000,000 (£159+ Million)

Released in 2009 by Infinity Ward, CoD:MW2 is the most popular entry in the Call of Duty line of games. On its first day of release, MW2 had sold over 4.7 million copies in the UK and USA alone.

#2 Grand Theft Auto V – $265,000,000 (£169+ Million)

GTA5 made $800 million in its first 24 hours of release – and hit the $1 billion mark just two days later.

GTA5 holds the most successful media launch of all time, topping out the previous gaming record by an extra $300 million in first day sales.

#1 Destiny – $500,000,000 (£319+ Million)

Although Destiny is the most expensive video game ever made, it was also the most pre-ordered new IP ever.

Destiny was first hinted at in the 2009 Bungie game Halo 3: ODST, three years before its initial announcement. It was also trademarked in the same year, five years before its release.
